Pleasant History (2016)
In previous work I have created impermanent installations referring back to the people during the First World War. With Pleasant History I wanted to expand and push my work forward by turning the focus onto my own heritage, and pays homage to her great grandfather, Robert Pleasant Brown. As Robert Pleasant Brown returned from traveling he would often bring home souvenirs, one being a cheap handmade ceramic trinket from Japan. I took this idea and wanted to create a work of art inspired by this, so I handmade a variation of cylinders, all of which have a blue screen printed image on the surface. The images are either of her great grandfather himself during the war, photographs he has taken travelling or patterns of the places he has once travelled to during this time.
